Wildcats Stumble Against Bengals

OGDEN, Utah – After winning seven out of their previous eight matches, the Weber State Wildcats fell in four sets to the Idaho State Bengals in Swenson Gym on Friday.

Things were going in favor of the 'Cats early on as WSU jumped out to a 5-2 lead to open the match. Idaho State, however, countered with a five-point run to give the Bengals their first lead. The two sides exchanged points and leads throughout the middle portions of the opening frame up until a Baylee Bodily service ace gave Weber State its final lead of the set at 18-17. The Bengals closed strong with eight of the last ten points to take the first set.

A Bengals attack error gave Weber State a 15-12 lead at the media timeout of the second frame and capped off a three-point WSU run. Following a pair of ISU points, a Dani Richins kill extended the Wildcat lead back to three. The Bengal offense started to roll and Idaho State closed out the set at 25-22 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

With their backs against the wall, the Wildcats showed what they're capable of in the third set. Five kills from Richins helped rally the offense, and a typically stout block from the Wildcats held Idaho State to a -.057 hitting percentage, and the Wildcats cruised to a 25-15 third set victory.

The fourth set was one of the most competitive sets played in Swenson Gym this season. A kill from Ashley Gneiting gave WSU a chance to close out the set at 24-23, but Idaho State scored two straight points to give the Bengals their first match point. ISU had the edge for the majority of extra points with a total of six match points compared to Weber State's two set points, and a WSU attacking error gave the Bengals a 3-1 win over the Wildcats.

The loss drops Weber State to 13-8 (7-3) on the season.

QUOTABLES

"They exploited about everything that we have ever tried to work on. Our weaknesses. They played well and we kind of just didn't come out very well to begin with. By the time we decided to play hard they had all the momentum. Hats off to them, it was a nice match. […] We're not as good as we think we are. We have a lot of room to grow and mostly just by our effort. Hopefully we can do the things we need to do to be successful and not allow other things to get in the way of our success."– Jeremiah Larsen
