Wildcats Fight to the End, Fall to Bears

11/12/2022 9:12:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

GREELEY, Colorado – Weber State volleyball wrapped up its final road trip of the 2022 season with a 3-2 (11-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 19-21) loss to Northern Colorado on Saturday night.

Northern Colorado jumped all over WSU to start the match. The opening frame was the Bears' from the start and they cruised to a 25-11 set win.

The following frame was significantly more competitive and the Wildcats were able to hang with the Bears until the final portions of the set, when the uber-experience Bears pulled away to finish out the set 25-18.

The Wildcats weren't done yet. Weber State, one of the youngest teams in the Big Sky Conference and regularly plays five freshmen, went toe-to-toe on the road against a team that has tons of senior experience and leadership.

Weber State fell behind early on in the set at 6-3, but a Makayla Sorensen kill capped of a six-point run to give the Wildcats a three-point lead. The two old rivals went back and forth and were tied at 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, and 23 points each before a Baylee Bodily kill gave WSU a set point, and a Dani Richins swing gave the 'Cats their 25th point to extend the match to a fourth set.

The ever-important momentum stayed with the purple and white in the fourth set. Kate Standifird served an ace to give WSU its initial lead in the set at 3-2, and the Wildcats never relinquished it from there. The 'Cats outhit (.204-.143), out-blocked (3-2), and out-aced (3-2) Northern Colorado in the fourth set and went on to win the set by seven points.

After being dropping the first two sets on the road on the Bears' senior night, the young Wildcats showed off their resilience to advance all the way to a fifth set. WSU certainly had its chances to close the match out with several match points, but the Northern Colorado seniors refused to be denied, and stole the fifth set from Weber State with a 21-19 victory; the Bears won the match by a final score of 3-2.

Weber State falls to 16-9 (10-4) on the year after splitting its last two matches on its final road trip of the regular season.
