OGDEN, Utah – In its final non-conference game of the season, the Weber State Wildcat women's basketball team fell to the no. 12 Utah Utes by a final score of 88-52.
The first quarter was closely contested with Weber State holding a lead a 9-6 and 11-9 behind seven combined points from Daryn Hickok and Jadyn Matthews, but the Utes went on a late run to finish out the quarter with a 23-11 lead.
Laura Taylor highlighted the second quarter for WSU with a pair of shots from the outside to give Weber State six of their 14 points in the second quarter. Utah's offense stayed hot, however, and the Utes took a 47-25 lead into the locker rooms.
Half a dozen points from Hickok and triples from Taylor and Emma Torbert helped anchor the Wildcat offense in the third quarter. The twelfth-ranked Utes kept the pace on offense, however and the third quarter ended with the Utes holding a 67-40 lead.
Matthews pulled down five of her team-high 10 rebounds in the fourth, and Torbert tallied another three pointer. Weber State wasn't able to make up any ground on one of the best teams in the nation, however, and Utah pulled away with the 88-52 victory over the Wildcats.
Weber State wraps up non-conference action with a 4-8 record.
NOTABLES
-Jadyn Matthews' march to 1,000 career points continues. She scored seven points on Saturday evening and now has 936 points for her career.
-With 12 points for the game, Daryn Hickok maintains her streak of scoring 10 or more points in every game this season.
-Saturday's game was the sixth time this season and 23rd time in Matthews' career that she tallied 10 or more rebounds.
-Aaliyah Ellis scored a career-high six points.
-Emma Torbert played in her second game of year and scored nine points including two three pointers.
QUOTABLES
"We knew coming in that they are number 12. If you saw, we started the game and we came out with confidence. We were sticking with them. We knew at some point Utah was going to make a run. It was a question as to whether or not we were going to keep fighting and stay sound. We lose three games in a row and two of the three we gave away. What we haven't done in two of those three games is come out ready in the third quarter. We did today and Utah was forced to call a timeout because we came out ready to play. […] We have to understand that all the little things matter. The things that may seem arbitrary and that I'm stickler about, it all matters. Every single piece of it. What I'm hoping and what I'm prayerful about and what we talked about in the locker room is consistency. We need our bench to provide production. […] We have to come back from the holiday and be ready to play and be ready to fight." – Velaida Harris
