PROVO - Weber State made another second half rally in an in-state road battle but couldn't convert down the stretch and lost 63-57 Thursday night against BYU at the Marriott Center.

The Wildcats trailed by 10 points in the second half but rallied to cut the lead to one point with 2:38 to play. BYU made eight free throws in the final two minutes to hold on for the win.

Both teams struggled from the field. The Wildcats shot 39 percent and BYU shot 38 percent. Both teams were 6 of 24 from 3-point range. BYU outrebounded Weber State 39-27 and the Wildcats forced 15 turnovers.

"Our team showed a lot of competitive character tonight and gave a great effort," said WSU head coach Eric Duft. "We played the game plan how we needed to win, we just didn't make the shots we needed to."

Weber State jumped out to an early 14-7 lead with nine points by Alex Tew in the first 6:47 of the first half.

The 'Cats led again at 16-10 before a 12-2 BYU run gave the Cougars a 22-18 lead with five minutes to play and led 29-24 at halftime.

BYU started the second half on a 6-1 run and led by 10 at 35-25.

The Wildcats held the Cougars without a field goal in the final 3:34 and cut the lead to one point at 55-54 with 2:38 to play, before BYU sealed the win at the free throw line.

Dillon Jones led the Wildcats with 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds. He was 7 of 11 from the field and scored 13 points in the second half and had two steals and two assists.

Tew finished with 12 points on 5 of 7 shooting. KJ Cunningham started his second-straight game and had eight points with two assists.

The Wildcats sit at 5-8 after the final non-conference game of the season. Weber State will return home for three-straight games to begin Big Sky play, beginning Thursday, Dec. 29 against Northern Colorado.
