'Cats close out 2022 2-0 in Big Sky play

Weber State shot a season-best 58 percent from the field to beat NAU 76-60. WSU has won five of its last six games.

OGDEN - Weber State closed out 2022 with its second Big Sky win of the season as the Wildcats defeated Northern Arizona 76-60 Saturday afternoon at the Dee Events Center. 

The 'Cats have now won five of their last six games and are 2-0 to begin conference play. 

Weber State shot a season-best 58 percent from the field in the win. 

NAU jumped out to a 27-19 lead before the Wildcats closed the first half on an 18-3 run and led 37-29 at the break. 

NAU regained the lead in the second half at 43-41 early in the second half, before a 9-0 Wildcat run gave WSU the lead for good. The 'Cats led 54-49 with nine minutes to play before another 18-3 run gave Weber State a 20-point lead. 

The 'Cats were 29 of 50 from the field and held NAU to 42 percent shooting. WSU was just 5 of 16 from 3-point range but outrebounded the Lumberjacks 29-26 and was 13 of 16 from the free throw line. 

WSU also outpaced NAU 48-18 in points in the paint. 

Senior transfer Junior Ballard led Weber State with 16 points and knocked down four 3-pointers and Steven Verplancken Jr. added 14 points for the Wildcats. 

Do it all Dillon Jones had nine points, all coming in the second half. He also pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds, to go along with seven assists and four steals. 

Alex Tew and Zahir Porter each added nine points and freshman Daniel Rouzan had eight points off the bench. 

The Wildcats will open 2023 with just one game next week when they host Idaho State on Saturday, January 7 at 7 p.m.
