'Cats fall 64-52 at California Baptist

Dillon Jones scored a season-high 22 points.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Dillon Jones scored a season-high 22 points but Weber State couldn't overcome a slow first half and lost 64-52 to California Baptist Wednesday night. 

The Wildcats outscored the Lancers 37-33 in the second half but were outscored 31-15 in the first half after shooting just 29 percent from the field. 

WSU made three 3-pointers in the first few minutes of the second half and cut the lead to seven points at 41-34 with 14:16 to play. 

The 'Cats trailed by eight with 8:49 to play when California Baptist went on an 11-2 run and led by 17 with 6:13 to play. WSU was never closer than 12 points the rest of the way. 

California Baptist shot 44 percent from the field, compared to 36 percent for the Wildcats. WSU was 5 of 21 from 3-point range and were outrebounded 41-28, including 16 offensive rebounds. Weber State was 11 of 12 from the free throw line and entered the game ranked second in the country in free throw percentage. 

Jones finished with a season-high 22 points and scored 17 points in the second half. He was 7 of 13 from the field and knocked down three 3-pointers. He also pulled down five rebounds. 

Steven Verplancken was next with seven points. Alex Tew scored four points and tied his career-high with eight rebounds. He also dished out a career-best four assists. 

The Wildcats are back home Saturday night to host Division II Saint Martin's. Tipoff at 7 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.
