WSU's second half rally not enough as Vandals win 83-79

Weber State back home for two games this week hosting Sacramento State Thursday and Northern Colorado on Saturday.
MOSCOW, Idaho - Weber State rallied from a big first half deficit but it wasn't enough as the Wildcats dropped their third straight game 83-79 to the Idaho Vandals Saturday afternoon at the ICCU Arena.
The loss drops Weber State to 18-8 overall and 11-4 in Big Sky play, with five conference games remaining.
How it happened
The first half was all Idaho as the Vandals jumped out to a 12-0 run. Idaho also led 17-6 and later led by as many as 20 points at 37-17 with 1:20 to play.
Weber State scored the final seven points of the half and trailed 37-24 at the break. The Vandals shot 61 percent from the field in the first half, compared to just 30 percent for Weber State.
But the second half was a different story. The Wildcats started the second half on a 19-5 run and took their first lead at 43-42 with 13:42 to play. Over a seven-minute stretch that started with the final minute of the first half, it was a 26-5 Wildcat run.
However, the 43-42 lead turned out to be the only lead for the Wildcats in the game.
The Vandals built their lead back to 10 points at 73-63 with six minutes to play.
The Wildcats rallied to cut the lead to five points with five minutes to play. WSU had a 5-0 run and cut the lead to two points with 1:23 to play, but the Vandals made five free throws in the final 16 seconds to seal the win.
Key numbers
Idaho shot 58 percent from the field for the game and knocked down eight 3-pointers. The Vandals were also 13 of 16 from the free throw line.
Weber State shot 47 percent but was just 4 of 19 from the 3-point line and 17 of 25 from the free throw line.
The Vandals also outrebounded the Wildcats 37-25.
The Wildcats had a season-low five turnovers with just one turnover in the second half, and WSU recorded nine steals.
Weber State had four players in double figures led by Koby McEwen who finished with 22 points on 8 of 14 shooting. He also added three rebounds and three steals. Dillon Jones had his 13th double-double of the season as he finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with three steals. JJ Overton also added 17 points and Dontay Bassett had 13 points.
The game was the 500th career game for Randy Rahe as the head coach at Weber State. Rahe is Weber State's and the Big Sky's all-time leader in victories and games coached.
