'Cats Lead Late But Ultimately Fall To Bobcats

2/5/2022 4:09:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Wildcats give up 25 offensive rebounds in loss

Bozeman, MT - Weber State fought through a tough rebounding game today to give themselves a chance at victory against the Montana State Bobcats in Bozeman, Montana, but ultimately fell 71-74. The loss dropped the Wildcats to 4-9 in Big Sky play (8-13 overall).

How It Happened:
The Wildcats started the game slowly, in a first quarter in which the Bobcats out-rebounded the Wildcats 20-6. Montana State's 11 offensive rebounds led to 24 shots vs Weber's 12, but Weber's defensive tenacity kept them in the game as they trailed by only 4 points, 10-14.

A better rebounding effort by the Wildcats in the second quarter brought the 'Cats back even. An offensive rebound putback by Daryn Hickok with 3:48 left in the half put the 'Cats up 23-22, but Weber would not score another field goal the rest of the half and at halftime trailed by 3, 26-29.

Montana State opened their biggest lead of the game (8) with 8:06 to go in the final frame. Weber tightened their defense, and three 3-pointers, two by Kori Pentzer and one by Jayden Matthews tied the game at 57 with under 5 minutes to go. The game went back and forth from that point until 1:37 left, when Emma Torbert fouled Darian White and subsequently received a technical foul for disputing the call, to give the Bobcats 4 straight free throw attempts. After in-bounding the ball, the 'Cats fouled again, which gave the Bobcats a total of 6 free throws without the Wildcats touching the ball on the offensive end and put the 'Cats down by 4 with 1:31 to go. The 'Cats had to put the Bobcats on the line the rest of the way in order to try to claw back even, but ultimately came up short when a 3-point attempt by Aloma Solovi was blocked by Darian White to secure the win for Montana State.

Numbers to Know:
Weber State won the first meeting between the two teams 68-63 and out-rebounded the Bobcats in that game 39-35. This game was a different story on the boards with Montana State grabbing 25 offensive rebounds, which led to the Bobcats taking 27 more shots than the Wildcats. Daryn Hickok and Jayden Matthews both had solid games for the Wildcats with Hickok scoring 22 on 7-9 shooting and Matthews scoring 18 going 7-10.

Next Up: The 'Cats return home Thursday, Feb 10 against Eastern Washington.
