The first position preview of fall camp may be the position with the most returning players. The Wildcat running back group features a talented group of returning players with several years of experience at Weber State.Â
Running backs coach Robert Conley gives a preview of this talented group which is led by two-time All-American Josh Davis who is back for his senior season. Davis was an All-American in 2018 and 2019, in addition to winning the Jerry Rice Award in 2018 as the National Freshman of the Year. He has earned first-team All-Big Sky honors three times in his career and is one of the top running backs in WSU history.Â
He played in just six games last season due to injuries but enters 2022 ranked third in school history in career rushing yards with 3,165 with 23 touchdowns. He is also seventh in all-purpose yards with 4,045. Â
Also returning is sophomore Dontae McMillan who was the Big Sky Freshman of the Year during the spring 2021 season. McMillan has played in 18 games in two seasons at Weber State and has 149 carries for 850 rushing yards and nine touchdowns.Â
Another returning Wildcat is super senior Kevin Smith Jr. who is beginning his seventh year at Weber State, although he has not played since 2019. In a career that began as a freshman in 2016, Smith has missed the last two seasons due to injuries but is back for the 2022 season. He has played in 35 games at Weber State and has 1,232 career rushing yards with eight touchdowns.Â
Junior Kris Jackson also returns with lots of experience. Jackson has played in 25 games over the last four seasons and has 602 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns.Â
Sophomore Damon Bankston also returns after playing in 10 games in 2021 and rushing for 123 yards and three touchdowns.Â
Those five running backs have combined for nearly 6,000 rushing yards and 60 touchdowns.Â
