Wildcats Fight and Fall Against Miami
9/3/2022 9:08:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
LAS VEGAS, Nevada – In the finale of the UNLV Rebel Classic on Saturday afternoon, Weber State fell to the Miami Hurricanes 3-1 (21-25, 25-23, 15-25, 18-25).
In the opening set of the match the Canes jumped out to a 6-0 lead and looked poised to run away with the set. The Cats, however, had other plans. Miami extended its lead to 10-4, but Weber State scored four consecutive points – highlighted by a Kate Standifird ace – to close the gap. The two sides went back and forth and Weber State took the lead at 15-14 on a Miami hitting error, but the Canes scored six of the next seven points to regain a five-point advantage. WSU cut the score to 21-19 late in the set, but weren't able to flip the score. Miami took the set 25-21.
The tides turned in the second set, however. The Hurricanes got out to an early 7-3 lead before the Wildcats rattled off four consecutive points, punctuated by a kill from Dani Richins. The Wildcats exchanged punches with Miami tying the score at 8, 14, and 15, but then Weber State was able to take control. The Cats took a 23-19 lead before Miami was forced to call a timeout. Miami scored four of the next five points after the break, but an Ashley Gneiting kill wrapped things up for Weber State at 25-23.
That was the first set that Miami – a team who received 61 votes in the most recent AVCA top 25 poll – has lost thus far this season.
It seemed that dropping the second set awakened a sleeping giant, though, and Miami came out with a vengeance in the third and fourth frames. The Canes led and controlled the third and fourth sets winning them 25-15 and 25-18 respectively.
With Saturday afternoon's loss, the Wildcats round up the Rebel Classic going 1-2 in the competition and fall to 4-2 on the year.
