Wildcat Women Fight with Griz, Fall in OT
1/12/2023 10:00:00 PM | Women's Basketball
OGDEN, Utah – In one of the most exciting games of the season, the Weber State Wildcat women's basketball team fell to the Montana Grizzlies in overtime by a score of 67-64.
Montana leapt out to a 7-2 lead to start the game off, but four straight points from Jadyn Matthews kickstarted what ended up to be an eight-point run for the Wildcats to end the first period with a 10-7 lead.
The second quarter swung in favor of the Griz, however. A jumper from Daryn Hickok with 7:48 left in the half gave the 'Cats a 14-11 lead, but Montana got hot and closed the half on a 15-7 run to take a 26-21 lead into the locker rooms.
A converted and one to go along with a three pointer from Matthews helped anchor the Wildcat offense in the third quarter. WSU outscored Montana 18-17 in the third to chip into the Griz lead, but the Wildcats still trailed by four heading to the fourth.
The Wildcats scored four points off of fast breaks in the fourth quarter, to go along with a corner three from Laura Taylor helped pace WSU. A Vicky Parra layup with 1:11 left in the game gave the 'Cats a 53-51 lead, but a pair of Montana free throws late in the game knotted things up and sent the game to overtime.
Montana scored on a layup with just over a minute and a half put the Griz up by four points and things seemed out of reach for Weber State. The Wildcats punched back immediately with an Ava Williams jumper to cut the lead in half. Two free throws from the Griz with 12 seconds left in the game extended the Griz lead to four, but Taylor sniped a three from the right wing with five seconds on the clock slashed the lead to just a single point. Montana made a couple of free throws and Taylor had a contested look with a second left, but it didn't fall and Montana eeked out a three-point win over the Wildcats.
NOTABLES
-With 14 points on the night, Matthews now sits at 973 for her career as she climbs closer to being the 23rd Wildcat to reach the 1,000-point plateau.
-Matthews led the Wildcats with 14 points and 11 boards for her seventh double-double of the season and the 19th of her career.
-Weber State won the turnover battle with a +6 turnover margin.
-The Wildcats had four players score in double figures (Hickok, Kaiija Lesane, Matthews, Taylor), and another Wildcat (Williams) with 8 points.
QUOTABLES
"Tonight I saw a lot of players step up for us. We hold them to 25% shooting for the first half and 32% for the game. 14 steals and 15 assists are season highs. We force 20 turnovers. All of that feels like it should be a W. In regulation we had a chance to go up four and we make a costly error, but we bounce back and have an opportunity right at the rim. It was ours for the taking. In overtime I thought we played tough. A big three by Gfellar, but we come back down and finish. I was proud of our late game execution. We had a shot at the buzzer. We talk about it every day; every possession matters. We've had a tough stretch. We've had players out with injuries, reinserting people into the lineups and no real consistency the past three weeks. It's hurt us, but what I can say and you can see it; these young women never quit! They fight." – Velaida Harris
