Weber State hosts Adams State Thursday at 7 p.m. in a free exhibition game.

Basketball is upon us and the Weber State men's basketball team will hold an exhibition game Thursday prior to opening the 2023-24 season.

The Wildcats will host Adams State on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Dee Events Center.

Admission is free for all fans. There will be no TV or streaming of the game but live stats will be available at WeberStateSports.com.

Expectations are high for the Weber State team as the Wildcats were selected as the preseason favorites in the Big Sky preseason media and coaches polls.

Head coach Eric Duft returns for his second season as head coach and his 18th season on the Wildcat coaching staff. He led WSU to an 18-15 overall record last year and a third-place finish in the Big Sky at 12-6. The Wildcats advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

Weber State returns all five starters from last year's team, led by junior Dillon Jones, who earned first-team All-Big Sky and all-district honors last year and was a unanimous selection as the Big Sky Preseason MVP.

Jones led the Wildcats in points, rebounds, assists, and steals last season and recorded 20 double-doubles. He led the country in defensive rebounds and finished fifth in overall rebounding at 10.9 per game. In three seasons at Weber State, he has played in 88 career games with 65 starts. He is fifth in school history with 833 career rebounds and eighth in career rebounding average. He is also fifth in career steals with 147 and ranks 22nd in career scoring with 1,138 career points. He is the only player in Weber State history with at least 1,000 career points, 800 rebounds, 250 assists, and 100 steals.

This past summer he participated in the G League and NBA Draft combines before returning to Weber State for the season.

The Wildcats also return senior guard Steven Verplancken who earned third-team All-Big Sky honors last year and was also named to the Big Sky Preseason All-Conference team.

Also returning as starters are senior KJ Cunningham, junior Dyson Koehler, and junior Alex Tew

Other returning players are Handje Tamba and Louie Jordan who played last season, and Chris Dockery who sat out the season as a red shirt.

WSU also added several new players to this year's team, including transfers Blaise Threatt and Arnaud Revaz. The 'Cats also added three international freshmen in Viljami Vartiainen from Finland and cousins Marko Sarenac and Nemanja Sarenac from Serbia.

Following Thursday's exhibition game, Weber State opens the season on Tuesday, November 7 against Benedictine Mesa. The 'Cats will then play at Saint Mary's on November 12.
