‘Cats advance to the semifinals of the 2023 Big Sky Championship

Greeley, CO – After a dominating 3-0 (25-21, 31-29, 25-18) match against the Portland State Vikings this Wednesday morning, the Weber State volleyball squad advances to the semifinals of the Big Sky Championship.

Weber State played a great first set to open the match. With Portland State leading 8-2, the Wildcats came out of a timeout ready for a fight to earn the 1-0 advantage. The 'Cats earned quite the comeback as Weber State collected a 4-point run to gain the lead 16-14. From there the Vikings came close to regaining the lead but the Wildcats stood firm to take the 25-21 set victory.

Set two proved to be the most challenging as it was a back-and-forth battle between the two squads with each exchanging leads throughout. Weber State held on to an early 9-6 lead but a few errors then made by the Wildcats tied the set 10-10. The Vikings ran with a 3-1 lead taking it to 13-11 and holding on to that lead until Weber State tied the set 24-24. The two teams then exchanged kills one after another, but WSU scored on three of the last points of the set with a kill made by Baylee Bodily to close out a hard-fought 31-29 set win. The set was tied 14 times throughout and the Wildcats outhit the Vikings .271-.178 with 22 kills compared to their opponents 14.

With a 2-0 lead in their pocket, the Wildcats were on the cusp of closing out the match with a sweep. The final set of the morning was in favor of the Wildcats as they found momentum early on to lead 12-3. The Viking's defense was picked apart by the Wildcat offense and with Portland unable to recover, Weber State took a commanding 3-0, 25-18 win to finish the match.

Baylee Bodily led Weber State in kills with 16. Ashley Gneiting totaled eight and Mia Peterson with six. The Wildcats outhit the Vikings .223-.198 with 45-39 kills.

"Survive and advance," said WSU head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "It was a great team effort and we feel fortunate to be able to play on Thanksgiving."

Up Next: The Wildcats will take on the winner of this evening's match between the Sacramento State Hornets and the Idaho State Bengals tomorrow, Nov. 23 at 4 p.m.
