OGDEN - It was a beautiful spring day Saturday at Stewart Stadium as Weber State football wrapped up the spring season with the annual spring game.Â
The defense defeated the offense 34-27 in the modified scoring system as the 'Cats ran approximately 75 plays in the scrimmage.Â
"There was a lot of good today and a good stepping stone two where we need to get to going into fall camp," said new Wildcat head coach Mickey Mental. "We have put ourselves in a good position with our young players to get developed. We came out today and did a good job on both sides of the ball. The defense started fast and the offense caught up later."Â
The defense got off to a big lead forcing two turnovers and stopping the defense on multiple attempts.
Wildcat All-American Abraham Williams had an interception that he returned 40 yards for a touchdown. Senior Naseme Colvin also had an interception and returned it 60 yards.Â
The defense also saw a sack by Mapa Vaenuku and multiple tackles for loss.Â
The offense later got going and scored three touchdowns on the day, all coming in the second half of the scrimmage. Â
Kylan Weisser started the game at quarterback and threw for 39 yards. Freshman Tiger Adolpho connected with freshman Jett Vance for a 41-yard completion, the longest of the day. Adolpho also ran for 30 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown. Nine different Wildcats also had receptions on the day.Â
On the ground the Wildcats combined for over 200 rushing yards. Steven Shoats-Thomas had eight carries for 69 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown. Kris Jackson had 36 yards and Dontae McMillan and Damon Bankston each had 21 yards.Â
Â
On special teams, Sloan Calder added a 38-yard field goal and Kyle Thompson connected on a 30-yard field goal.Â
The Wildcats now move their attention to the 2023 season. Weber State will open the season on Thursday, August 31 against Central Washington. WSU will also play at Northern Iowa and Utah in the non-conference season, then begin Big Sky play against Montana State at home on September 23. The 'Cats also host Northern Arizona, UC Davis, and Idaho at home this season.Â
Season tickets for the 2023 season are on sale now. Construction is also underway for upgrades to Stewart Stadium. The east stands will be completely upgraded and renovated. A new updated field and track will also be in place for the 2023 season.
