Weber State falls 3-1 in Big Sky play.
OGDEN - Weber State volleyball fell to the Montana State Bobcats in a thrilling five-set match this Saturday evening. The loss puts the Wildcats to 3-1 in Big Sky play.
SET 1 | The Wildcats took their first lead in the set 5-4 after a Victoria Marthaler kill. The Wildcats held onto that lead until the Montana State squad tied it up 9-9. Quickly following, big kills by Ashley Gneiting and Liana Woodley put WSU back up by two. It was tight for the remainder of the set as MSU trailed Weber State by no more than two points. A Marthaler kill advanced the Wildcats to set point but not long before the Bobcats tied it up 24-24. After a battle between both squads to end the set, it ultimately fell in favor of Weber State 33-31.
SET 2 | The second set was similar to the first as a back and forth battle occurred between the two squads. Montana State went up after a 3-0 run but short lived as the set was tied 15-15. MSU went on a four-point run helping them to secure the set 25-20. A closely contested set, Weber State hit .326 percent and their opponents .352. Woodley, a senior, had seven kills total between the two sets for a .500 hitting percentage. The score was tied 13 times, with six lead exchanges.
SET 3 | It was all Weber State to start the set, with an early 6-2 lead until the MSU squad chipped away at the deficit and took the advantage 15-13. The Bobcats carried that momentum to a 25-23 set victory.
SET 4 | The Wildcats and Bobcats rallied in the fourth. A 6-0 run for WSU gave the Wildcats some separation from the Bobcats; however, the MSU offense fought to tie the set 20-20. Momentum from a won Weber State challenge helped to carry the Wildcats to a 25-20 win and push the match to a fifth set.
SET 5 | Weber State came back from a 6-3 deficit and took the lead 11-10 until a MSU challenge reversed the point and the Bobcats were up by one. Montana State then racked up a 4-0 run and secured the set 15-11.
Weber State ended the match with a .214 hitting percentage. Saane Munyer totaled 13 kills at .556 percent and Woodley with 14 kills and .429 percent. Gneiting led the Wildcats with 19 digs on the night.
