Wildcats fall in four to Vikings

PORTLAND, Ore. - During the last week of the regular season, Portland State volleyball defeated Weber State in four sets this Thursday night. The loss drops the Wildcats to 10-5 in Big Sky play.

SET 1 | Starting the match, a tough Wildcat squad secured a 25-19 set one victory. Using an early 6-0 run, the Weber State squad was put in a lead that the Vikings could not recover from. Stringing together a couple of points near the end of the set, Portland State trailed the 'Cats by six. However, it was not enough to return from the deficit and the Wildcats took the first set.

SET 2 | Portland State found their footing in the second set, staying neck and neck with the Wildcats and taking their first lead in the match at 6-5. Unable to recover from the Vikings lead, Weber State stayed close but continued to trail Portland State. However, a resilient Wildcat squad tied the set 16-16 following an error by the Vikings. Two points then made by Portland State forced Weber State to a timeout. Following the timeout, another error by the Vikings and a kill by Ashley Gneiting tied the set again. Weber State took the lead off of a Viking error but the two squads continued to exchange points until Portland State ultimately won the set 26-24.

SET 3 | In the third set, the Wildcats came out strong, surging to a 4-0 lead thanks to the front-line efforts of Gneiting, Rose Moore, and Stacia Barker. However, the Vikings closed the gap with a four-point and five-point run to take the advantage 16-12. Maintaining that lead, the Vikings sealed the set with a 25-21 win.

SET 4 | To start the fourth set, Portland State went on a critical 6-0 run to establish an 8-2 lead. The Wildcats responded with a 4-0 run of their own to trail the Vikings by two. The purple and white battled to tie the score 16-16 after a Kate Payne service ace and forced Portland State to a timeout. A late 4-0 run for the 'Cats tied the set 21-21 but the Vikings worked to take back their edge and ultimately won the set 25-23 clinching the match 3-1.
