Wildcats fall in five set heartbreaker to Bears in semifinal match of the Big Sky Tournament

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A resilient Weber State volleyball team came back after falling 2-0 in the semifinal match of the Big Sky Tournament but ultimately fell to the number one seeded Northern Colorado Bears in a hard fought five set battle.Â
SET 1 | To start the match, a Northern Colorado 5-0 run put the Bears above the Wildcats 13-6. Weber State battled putting together a 4-0 run to trail the Bears by five and shortly after strung tougher a trio of points to be down by just three. However, a Northern Colorado kill and two Wildcat errors awarded the Bears the first set 25-19.
SET 2 | The Bears again pulled ahead in the second set 14-8 pushing the Wildcats to a timeout. Unable to recover from the deficit the Bears sealed the set 25-17.Â
SET 3 | Weber State came out strong in the third set, forcing Northern Colorado to a timeout after five straight points and a 6-2 lead. The Wildcats held onto that advantage as the Bears worked to stay in the set however, the Weber State offense didn't quit and the Wildcats took the set 25-11. The Wildcats totaled 13 kills for a .423 hitting percentage.
SET 4 | Weber State battled to stay in the match throughout the fourth set tying it up at 8-8. A kill by Rose Moore and service Ace by Kate Payne helped boost the Wildcats to a score of 11-8. The set continued to be closely contested as both teams exchanged points until Weber State went up by two at 20-18 and then closed out the set 25-20 pushing the match to a deciding fifth set.Â
SET 5 | Coming down to the fifth set, Weber State was looking to carry their momentum into a match victory. Falling behind the Bears by three, Weber State put together three kills and a Morgan Pratt service ace to tie the set 7-7 and then take the lead after a Baylee Bodily kill. The score remained close until the end as the set was again tied at 15-15. But two big Northern Colorado kills closed it out 17-15, awarded the Bears the match 3-2 and a spot in the Big Sky championship match.Â

- Moore led the team in kills with 19, a new single game career high. She finished the match with a .410 hitting percentage.
- Ashley Gneiting totaled 11 kills and 10 digs.Â
- Payne finished the match with five kills, 30 assists, and 10 digs.Â
- Saane Munyer had six blocks against the Bears.Â
