Weber State defeats Utah Tech, falls to Denver at Wildcat Invitational

OGDEN - Weber State volleyball started its 2024 season with a 3-1 victory over Utah Tech and 3-2 loss to Denver.
Weber State 3, Utah Tech 1
Weber State went neck and neck with Utah Tech to start the match until five straight points boosted the 'Cats to a 25-19 victory over the Trailblazers which included back to back kills from Ashley Gneiting.
With a strong start to the second, the Wildcats held the lead for the entirety of the set until two attack errors by the Trailblazers closed it out 25-15 in favor of Weber State.
Utah Tech found their footing in the third set taking a 6-0 lead over the Wildcats early on.
Two kills by Baylee Bodily helped pull the 'Cats to trail Utah Tech by five with a score of 9-4 however, Utah Tech continued their strong play not allowing Weber State a lead and earned their first set of the match 25-18.
Looking to close out the match, Weber State came into the fourth set hot.
Tied at 12-12, WSU battled with strong kills from the offense and took a 19-14 lead.
It was all the Wildcats from there as the squad closed the match 25-20 and earned their first victory of the 2024 season.
Gneiting led the Wildcats with 13 kills and a .140 percentage and Marly Pratt had 14 digs against the Trailblazers.
Weber State 2, Denver 3
Weber State made quick work of Denver in the first set with a 25-14 first set win.
The Wildcats and Pioneers stayed close in score in the second set until a three-point run made by the 'Cats pulled them ahead 15-13. However, a few errors made by Weber State cost them the set and the Pioneers took it 25-22.
Denver rolled that momentum into the third set holding a lead over the Wildcats that they could not recover from. The Pioneers took the set 25-18.
Finding their rhythm again in the fourth WSU took over and secured a 25-15 set victory. The Weber State squad hit .250 compared to the Pioneers .120.
It was a competitive fifth set with lead exchanges between both teams. Denver led the set with 12 kills and a .364 hitting percentage to win the set 15-11 and the match 3-2.
COMING UP
Weber State will travel to Dallas, TX for the SMU Tournament September 5-7 where they will face SMU, LMU, and Milwaukee.
