WSU drops match to LMU on day one of the SMU Tournament

DALLAS -Â The Wildcats took to Moody Coliseum on Thursday night to open the SMU Tournament against the LMU Lions and stayed competitive but ultimately ended up falling 3-1.Â
SET 1 | Weber State pulled to an early 6-1 lead in the first set courtesy of two kills by Jayda Tupea and a bomb by Ashley Gneiting. Quickly finding their footing, LMU tied 12-12 before taking a lead over the Wildcats. Holding onto that lead, LMU took the set 25-22.
SET 2 | Similar to set one, WSU took an early lead before the Lions took four straight points. Battling their way back, Weber State pushed to trail LMU by two with a score of 19-17 however, the Lions held that lead strong and finished the set 25-19.Â
SET 3 | Seven points came from attack errors made by the Lions in the third set and allowed the 'Cats an 8-5 advantage. The set tied at 9-9 but two attack errors, an ace, and a Wildcat kill increased Weber State's lead by four and the tough Weber State offense pushed the Lions to a timeout. Continuing that strong offense, a kill by Tupea and Rose Moore forced LMU to another timeout with the score at 21-15. The 'Cats came out from that and finished the set strong with a 25-19 victory.Â
SET 4 | The Lions came out fighting in the fourth set with a 7-0 advantage and kept that control to close out the set 25-20 and the match 3-1.Â
Weber State hit .100 as a team in the third set as the offense began to click. In total, the 'Cats had 41 kills to the Lions 50.
COMING UP
Weber State will face SMU on day two of the SMU Tournament on September 6 at 12 p.m. (MT). Following their match on Friday, the Wildcats will face Milwaukee on Saturday.
