Wildcats collect first win in Big Sky play after a 3-0 sweep over the Lumberjacks

9/25/2024 9:28:00 PM | Women's Volleyball

Flagstaff, Ariz. - Weber State Volleyball won their first Big Sky match of the season against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks with a 3-0 sweep in Flagstaff.

SET 1 | To set the tone early, Weber State began their first set of Big Sky play with a 25-22 set victory over NAU. The score was tight throughout the majority until a three-point run gave Weber State the momentum to earn the lead and secure the set.

SET 2 | It was all the Wildcats in set two as the WSU squad jumped out with a lead that the  Lumberjacks could not recover from. Weber State tallied four service aces during the set with one by Kate Payne to close it out 25-16.

SET 3 | The Lumberjacks trailed close to the Wildcats in the third set, tying it up 9-9 and then ultimately taking the lead. Weber State was hoping to regain their momentum from set one and two but NAU maintained a slim advantage until a kill by Rose Moore tied it up19-19. To take back the advantage, a solo block by Stacia Barker moved the score in favor of the 'Cats 23-21. Looking to put the Lumberjacks away it was match point after an Ashley Gneiting kill. A service ace by Moore finished the match 25-21, sweeping the Lumberjacks and earning the first Big Sky win of the season.

Gneiting led the 'Cats with 14 kills. Moore totaled 10 kills and Victoria Marthaler seven. Saane Munyer recorded six blocks against the Lumberjacks. Compared to their opponents, WSU hit .220 and NAU .155.

"That was a good win against a quality team," said head coach Jeremiah Larsen. "I thought we took a nice step forward to being the type of team I believe that we are."
