Wildcats fall 28-26 to Cowboys

Weber State returns to Big Sky play at Montana next Saturday.
The Cowboys led 7-6 at halftime before a high-scoring second half but the Wildcats couldn't convert on their final possession to seal the win.Â
McNeese scored on its first possession of the game to take a 7-0 lead. Neither team scored again until late in the second quarter when Richie Munoz found Marcus Chretien for a 10-yard touchdown. The 'Cats couldn't convert the two-point conversion attempt and trialed 7-6 at halftime.Â
Both teams scored 14 points in the third quarter. The Wildcats started the scoring with a five-yard touchdown from Muñoz to Dahlyn Jones, his second reception of the season.Â
McNeese came right back with a touchdown to regain the lead before Damon Bankson scored on a 9-yard run to make it 20-14 with 4:56 left in the third quarter.Â
The Cowboys scored in the quarter's final minute to make it 21-20, then scored again early in the fourth quarter as Joshon Barbie scored his third rushing touchdown, giving McNeese a 28-20 lead. Â
The 'Cats came back again with another Bankston touchdown with 8:15 to play but the rush attempt by Jacob Sharp failed.Â
Neither team scored the rest of the way as the Cowboys stopped the Wildcats in the final two minutes to secure the victory.Â
McNeese totaled 423 yards of offense, compared to 416 for the Wildcats who had 287 yards rushing and 129 yards passing.Â
Bankston surpassed 100 yards rushing for the third time this season as he had 21 carries for 140 yards and two touchdowns, and averaged 6.7 yards per carry. Freshman Davion Godley added 10 carries for 75 yards.Â
Muñoz was 16 of 30 passing for 129 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 45 yards. Sharp had three catches for 59 yards and Jayleen Record had four receptions for 28 yards.Â
Garrett Beck led the defense with nine tackles and EJ Evett added eight.Â
Weber State sits at 2-3 on the season and after three straight games against teams from teh Southland Conference, it's now back to the Big Sky for the Wildcats who will play at Montana next Saturday, October 5 at 1 p.m. in Missoula.Â
