Wildcats fall in heartbreaker in Big Sky Final

11/9/2025 4:55:00 PM | Women's Soccer

Missoula, MT - Weber State soccer saw its season come to an end as it fell to the Montana Grizzlies in penalties in the Big Sky Tournament Championship.

The record crowd in Missoula saw the two sides exchange blows for 110 minutes with neither team able to find the back of the net, forcing a penalty shoot-out. In penalty kicks, Montana scored 4 to the Wildcats' 2 to take home the tournament title and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

Both sides had chances throughout the game, with neither able to score in regulation or extra time.

In the first half alone, the Wildcats had chances on a Grace Kirby cross to Sayler Schlosser in the 3rd minute, Kirby had a shot blocked in the 29th, leading to a corner kick that was saved, and a shot from Brynlee Meyerhoffer in the 43rd minute that the Griz goalie rebuffed.

Montana had opportunities of their own in the first half, including a shot off the woodwork in the 36th minute, but the Wildcat defensive line was able to hold serve and force the 0-0 draw at the half.

In the second half, chances continued for both sides, including two Schlosser shots for the Wildcats. One resulted in a save in the opening minutes, and another landed in the top of the netting in the 83rd minute.

Montana's opportunities landed in the side-netting in the 72nd minute and missed high in the 89th minute, leading to another scoreless half and forcing extra time.

At the end of regulation, Montana was outshooting the Wildcats 10-9 with the two sides equal in corner kicks at 4 apiece.

The two sides ratcheted up the pressure as they moved to golden goal extra time, where the first team able to put it in the back of the net would clinch the Big Sky Tournament title.

It was in the opening minute of extra time that freshman Lauren Butorac saved a Griz shot to keep the Wildcats alive in their quest for their first Big Sky Tournament title since 2013.

The first session of extra time came and went with no goals from either side, forcing a second 10 minutes of extra time.

It was in this second session that the Wildcats went on the attack. Grace Kirby had a shot saved in the opening minutes, and Tenzi Knowles had her shot blocked and then saw the rebound try sail high in the 107th minute.

Then, in the final seconds of the 109th minute, Butorac sent a free kick into the box that Knowles put into the back of the net. However, the officials ruled that the ball was not fully over the line before the clock hit zero, sending the two sides to penalty kicks to determine the Big Sky Tournament winner.

In penalty kicks, Montana converted on 4, while Weber State converted on 2 kicks to secure the title for the Grizzlies.

The 'Cats close their season with a 12-7-1 mark under first-year head coach Kyle Christensen. The 12 wins are the most for the program since 2005.

Sunday afternoon was the final match in purple and white for 6 Wildcat seniors: Grace Kirby, Ella Sanders, Tenzi Knowles, Sayler Schlosser, Brynlee Meyerhoffer, and Sammie Sofonia.
