Wildcats take on Hornets in Big Sky Tournament First Round

Weber State will play Sacramento State on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. in the first round of #StarchMadness in Boise.
• It's time for Starch Madness. The 2025 Big Sky Basketball Championships tipoff this week in Boise, Idaho with Weber State taking on Sacramento State in the first round on Saturday.
• The Wildcats and Hornets will tipoff at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 from the Idaho Central Arena in Boise. The game will be televised on ESPN+ and the ESPN app with Tony Parks and former Wildcat coach Joe Cravens on the call. It will also be televised in Utah on Utah 16.

• Weber State enters the tournament as the No. 9 seed and finished the regular season at 11-21 overall and 5-13 in Big Sky play. The Wildcats are coming off a 68-63 loss to league-leading Northern Colorado on Monday night.
• Sacramento State is 7-24 overall and finished conference play in 10th place at 3-15. The Hornets enter the tournament with a four-game losing streak and have lost 11 of their last 12 but the only win in that 12-game span came over Weber State on February 20 in Ogden.
• The winner of Sunday's game will take on No. 1 seed and conference champion Northern Colorado on Sunday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m.
• This week marks the 50th Big Sky Conference postseason tournament and Weber State has participated in 48 of the 50 tournaments, the most of any team in conference history. The Wildcats have won the postseason tournament 10 times, the second-most in conference history and have advanced to the championship 17 times. WSU is 49-36 all-time in the tournament.
This will be the 10th straight year the tournament is held at a neutral site with all conference teams participating. It's the seventh straight year the tournament is held in Boise, Idaho.
• Wildcat senior Blaise Threatt finished the regular season with another sensational game as he scored 29 points with eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals against Northern Colorado.
Blaise has been blazing through the Big Sky and the nation this season. He finished the regular season ranked 19th in the nation in scoring at 20.1 points per game. He is also averaging 5.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists, and 1.9 steals per game.
Threat is the only player in the nation to average at least 20.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game. It's the third time in Wildcat history that a player has reached those benchmarks in a season. The other two were Damian Lillard in 2011-12, and Dillon Jones in 2023-24.
He leads Weber State in points, rebounds, assists, and steals, and is the only player in the Big Sky to lead his team in all four categories.
He is just the second Wildcat to ever lead the team in all four categories, joining Dillon Jones who did it in each of the last two seasons. Threatt has scored at least 20 points in eight of the last nine games and has reached 30 or more three times. He is the 13th player in WSU history to score at least 600 points in a season.
In the last nine games, he is averaging 25.6 points per game and has scored the fourth most points in the last month of any player in the country. In Big Sky play, he is averaging 22.6 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists per game.
On the season, he leads the Big Sky in steals and ranks second in the conference in scoring. He is also second in the conference in minutes played, third in assist to turnover ratio, fourth in assists, fifth in field goal percentage, and eighth in rebounds.
He has scored in double figures in all 30 games this year and 32 straight games dating back to last year, the fifth longest active streak in the country.
Threatt has 2,143 career points in 143 career games, which included three seasons at Division II Colorado Mesa and the last two at Weber State. He ranks 19th among active players in all divisions of the NCAA in career points, and has scored 948 points in 62 games over the last two seasons at Weber State.
• WSU freshman Trevor Hennig has scored in double figures in the last six games and eight of the last night games. Over the last nine games, he is averaging 13.4 points per game. In Big Sky play, he is third on the team in scoring at 10.2 per game.
Hennig has played in all 32 games and has started the last nine games.
• Wildcat senior Alex Tew has reached double figures in two of the last three games for the 'Cats and is shooting 69 percent from the field in the last three games.
Tew has played in 125 career games at Weber State, which is the eighth most games played in Wildcat history.
• Weber State is playing without their second and third leading scorers in seniors Dyson Koehler and Miguel Tomley who are both out the remainder of the season. Koehler broke his wrist on Feb. 3 and Tomley is dealing with a serious medial situation.
• Weber State's last five games have each been decided by five points or less and the 'Cats have had nine of their 18 Big Sky games, and 15 total games decided by five points or less.
• This season Weber State is 10-6 when leading in field goal percentage and just 1-14 when trailing in field goal percentage. The 'Cats are also 8-4 when leading at halftime and just 3-17 when trailing.
• Weber State and Sacramento State split the two games this season with each team winning on the road. The Wildcats won 87-81 on January 25 in Sacramento and the Hornets won 80-77 on February 20 in Ogden.
Weber State shot 53.7 percent from the field in the two games but the Hornets averaged 14.5 3-pointers in the two contests. Blaise Threatt and Viljami Vartiainen each averaged 23.0 points per game against the Hornets.
Vartiainen had his two highest scoring games of his career against Sacramento State this season. He had 22 points and made four 3-pointers in the win in Sacramento, and had a career-high 24 points and made a career-high six 3-pointers in the game against the Hornets in Ogden.
• The Hornets are fourth in the Big Sky in scoring defense and also rank fourth in field goal defense, 3-point defense, and 3-pointers made per game.
Jacob Holt is sixth in the conference in scoring at 16.2 points per game, and also ranks fourth in the Big Sky in rebounding and fourth in blocked shots.
• Weber State leads the overall series with Sacramento State 51-12 and Weber State has won nine of the last 11 games. This will be the sixth ever meeting in the Big Sky Tournament with Weber State leading 4-1 all-time. The two teams met in the quarterfinals in 2023 and in the first round in 2020.
