Korman, Gruher Lead 'Cats on Day One of Thunderbird Invitational

ST. GEORGE, Utah –– Cala Korman and Jade Gruher each shot a 2-over par 74 in the first round of the Pizza Hut Lady Thunderbird Invitational on Friday at Sunbrook Golf Club as the Weber State women's golf team opened the tournament in third place.
The Wildcats shot an 11-over par total of 299 on the day, matching Big Sky opponent Northern Arizona on the day. The two programs are six shots back of tournament leader UC Riverside, which shot 293 on Friday, and one back of second place Stetson. The tournament field features five Big Sky Conference programs in WSU, NAU, Montana State, Eastern Washington and Idaho State, and also three in-state rivals in tournament-host Southern Utah, Utah Valley and Utah Tech.
Korman posted three birdies on the day to offset a trio of bogeys and a double-bogey for her 74, while Gruher recorded four birdies against a pair of bogeys and two doubles on her card. The pair finished the day in an 11-way tie for 9th place overall.
Isabel Gutierrez carded two birdies on the day in a 3-over par opening round of 75 and is tied for 20th in a crowded leaderboard.
Emily Song recorded a lone birdie on her way to a 4-over par 76 and a tie for 25th, while Sofia Fuenmayor rounded out the Wildcats' scoring team with an 81 to tie for 58th place through 18 holes.
Three other Wildcats are in the field as individuals, led by Braylyn Bayer, who posted three birdies in a 5-over par 77 to grab a tie for 32nd place. Emma Lillywhite, who's card was highlighted by an eagle on the 465-yard, par 5 seventh hole, shot 78 on the day and is tied for 38th. And Brynn Bischoff posted an opening round 84 to tie for 67th place on the day.
Individually, the field is led by Stetson's Julieta Oviedo, who shot a 1-under par 71 to take a one shot lead heading into Saturday's second round.
Following tomorrow's second round, the 54-hole tournament will conclude on Sunday with the final 18 holes.
