Wildcats split day one of series against Hornets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The Wildcats split day one of their series against the Hornets this Friday afternoon as the squad defeated Sacramento State 4-3 in game one but fell 4-1 in game two.
GAME ONEWeber State 4, Sacramento State 3
The Hornets struck early as Malepeai launched a home run on Sacramento State's first at-bat of the game.
Sacramento State then threatened again in the bottom of the third, loading the bases after two Hornets were hit by pitches. A third hit-by-pitch brought in a run, extending their lead to 2-0.
Weber State responded in the fourth inning with the bases loaded and one out. Pinch hitter Apollonia Maldonado reached on a fielding error, allowing Sadie Kirk to score and Emma Bingham to score unearned.Â
The Wildcats took their first lead of the game in the sixth inning when Kirk hit her sixth double of the season, driving in two runs to put Weber State ahead 4-2.
Sacramento State cut the deficit to one run after an RBI single by Marsh. However, Weber State closed out the game as Jordan McMahon secured the final out with a catch in center field.
The 4-3 victory improves Weber State's record to 5-5 in Big Sky Conference play.
Cali McCraw earned the complete game win, striking out five. Abby Grundy went 2-for-4 at the plate, while Kirk went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
GAME TWO
Weber State 1, Sacramento State 4
The Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Kirk RBI ground out to second base.
The Hornets tied the game when Evans reached on a fielder's choice, allowing an unearned run to score.
In the fifth inning, Sacramento State's Evers-Lyles evened the score with a home run to right-center field.
The Hornets added two more runs in the sixth to take a 4-1 lead, thanks to another home run and a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Wildcats were unable to generate a comeback in the seventh, going down 4-1 to end the game.Â
Riley Whalen went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, while Kirk finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI.

Weber State will close out the series against Sacramento State on Saturday, April 19. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. MT.Â
