Wildcats top Hornets, close out series 2-1

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Weber State softball secured a 6-4 win this Saturday afternoon to secure the series 2-1 against the Hornets. The win improves the Wildcats 7-5 in conference play and ties the squad for second in the league.Â
Weber State struck first as Jordan McMahon delivered an RBI single to bring home Eva Richardson. The Wildcats added another run later in the second inning with an RBI single from Olivia Birkinshaw.
Abby Grundy extended the lead to 3-0 with her 16th double of the season.
The Wildcats continued to add to the board as Eva Richardson launched a three-run home run, her sixth of the season, pushing the lead to 6-0.
Sacramento State attempted a comeback, scoring two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, but the deficit proved too much.
Weber State closed out the series with a 6-4 win over Sacramento State.Â
Joslynn Veltien earned the win in the circle, facing eight batters in one inning of work.
Grundy led the Wildcats at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Birkinshaw also had a strong performance, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Richardson's big day included a home run and three RBI.Â

Weber State will close out Big Sky play against the Northern Colorado Bears in a weekend series starting Friday, April 25. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. The Wildcats will celebrate their five seniors on Saturday, April 26 following the game.Â
