Wildcats drop Big Sky opener to Vikings

PORTLAND, Oregon - Weber State women's basketball fell in their conference opener 58-68 after the Vikings late fourth quarter 17-0 run.
Weber State struggled early, falling behind 8-0 before Fui Niumeitolu put the Wildcats on the board with a 3-pointer at the five-minute mark. Both teams then went scoreless until the Vikings extended their lead with just under three minutes remaining in the first quarter. Unable to create much offense, the Wildcats finished the quarter down 18-8, shooting only 3-for-15 from the field and 1-for-6 from beyond the arc.
The Wildcats rallied in the second quarter, cutting the deficit to just four points with a six-point run. They then took the lead using seven straight points, including a Makenna Shaffer-Lauer jumper that made the score 23-22. Portland State then regained the lead and went ahead 26-25, but a Hannah Robbins 3-pointer immediately put Weber State back on top at 30-28. The Wildcats held onto this advantage into halftime, extending their lead to 34-31.Â
In the third quarter, Portland State worked to tie the game 42-42 and again at 46-46, but three Wildcat free throws closed out the quarter with the 'Cats on top 49-46. Both squads battled in the final ten minutes of gameplay however, with just over five minutes to go, the Vikings pulled out a huge 17-0 run to secure the game 68-58.Â
