Ross joins Weber State after 17 years working in professional basketball, including 14 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers.

OGDEN — Weber State men's basketball head coach Kaleb Canales has named John Ross assistant general manager of the Wildcats' program.

Ross joins Weber State after 17 years working in professional basketball, including 14 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers.

He arrives in Ogden after back-to-back seasons in the CEBL. In his first season, he was the lead assistant coach under Canales with the Calgary Surge, where they led the team to a Western Conference Championship and a trip to the Finals. This past season, he served as assistant general manager of the Brampton Honey Badgers and helped the team reach the CEBL Finals after winning the Eastern Conference championship.

"I'm beyond thrilled to add John Ross to our program as the Assistant General Manager," Canales said. "John's wealth of experience will add to our fabric of building a sustainable, consistent winner with high-character people who work hard at an elite level to develop our players' experience daily."

Ross spent 14 seasons with the Portland Trail Blazers, beginning as a video intern, where he worked alongside Canales, who was the team's head video coordinator. After five seasons as a video coordinator with the coaching staff, Ross transitioned to personnel video coordinator with the scouting staff.

In that role, Ross was involved in Portland's scouting efforts leading up to the NBA draft selections of Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. While evaluating Lillard during his career at Weber State, Ross regularly worked with WSU's staff to obtain game video for the Trail Blazers.
Lillard and McCollum helped Portland reach the NBA playoffs in eight consecutive seasons from 2014-21, including a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 2019.

Ross also founded GET IN THE GAME 101, where he writes a Substack and teaches online classes to support others looking to work in the NBA and have a career in basketball. He has now seen over 100 of his students get jobs in basketball, including 10 working in the NBA.

Beyond basketball, Ross is a humanitarian and has served at-risk children in Zimbabwe for over a decade. He has also made multiple trips to Ukraine to assist with refugee relief efforts.
