'Cats knock down Lumberjacks 72-53

OGDEN – Weber State made big runs and pulled away from Northern Arizona with a 72-53 win Saturday night at the Dee Events Center.
NAU jumped out to a seven-point lead four minutes into the game, but WSU later responded with an 8-0 run and led 28-23. The 'Cats closed the first half on an 8-2 run and led 38-32 at halftime. Weber State shot 58 percent from the field in the first half.
After closing the half on a run, the 'Cats also opened the second half on an 8-0 run and led by 14 points early in the half. A later 9-0 run gave the 'Cats their largest lead of 22 points at 64-43 with 6:15 to play, and the lead was never less than 16 the rest of the way.
Weber State shot 48 percent from the field and held Northern Arizona to 36 percent shooting. The 'Cats were 6 of 17 from 3-point range and outrebounded the Lumberjacks 39-27.
Tijan Saine Jr. led Weber State once again with 20 points, along with five assists, four rebounds, and two steals. He was also 8 of 8 from the free throw line.
Nigel Burris added 13 points, and Viljami Vartiainen scored 10 points with two 3-pointers. Malek Gomma had eight points and nine rebounds, and Duce Paschal added a career-high nine rebounds to go with four points.
The 'Cats were without Jace Whiting (foot) and Trevor Hennig, who is still out with illness.
The Wildcats are now 6-6 in Big Sky play with six conference games remaining. WSU plays at Idaho and Eastern Washington next week, then hosts Montana State and Montana on February 19 and 21 for the final home games of the season.
