Wildcats Surge to Third in Big Sky Championships Second Round

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. – Following a stellar second round at the Big Sky Conference Championship, the Weber State Men's Golf team has surged into a podium position, currently sitting in third place with a 4-under par score of 572 through 36 holes. The Wildcats shot the second-best score of the day on Tuesday on the Wigwam Resort (Gold Course) with a 15-under par 273.
The Wildcats' charge was led by a balanced attack, with all five scoring players turning in impressive performances to give Weber State a 26-stroke improvement from day one. Matthew Wilson and Bobby Kincaid led the way for Weber State on Tuesday with each player firing a 5-under par score of 67.
Wilson's round was highlighted by a five birdies in a bogey-free round as he moved into third place overall at 4-under par 140. Kincaid carded a pair of birdies against a single bogey to make the turn in 35, and added two more birdies and an eagle on the back nine to come in with a 32 as he jumped into fourth place at 3-under par 141.
Markus Nanpei was just one shot off the pace of Wilson and Kincaid, posting a strong 4-under par 68, posting five birdies against a single bogey as he moved up into a tie for 12th place at 1-over par 143.
Ty Anderson and substitute Ryan Takeshita, in the lineup for Jesus Castaneda, both contributed vital scores of 1-under par 71, giving the Wildcats all five players in red figures on the day. Anderson posted an eagle and two birdies on the day, moving into a tie for 19th place at 3-over par 147. Takeshita's round featured four birdies, three of which came on the back nine.
First round leader Sacramento State was the lone team to outpace the Wildcats on the day, shooting a phenomenal 18-under par 270 to take a big lead heading into Wednesday's final round. The Hornets are at 16-under par 560 through 36 holes and lead second place Idaho by 11 shots.
Francis Merion sits three shots back of the Wildcats in fourth at 575, with Northern Colorado in fifth at 579 and Eastern Washington in sixth at 585.
Sacramento State's Jai Bahl shot an 11-under par 61 on Tuesday to vault into the individual medalist lead at 10-under par 134. He leads teammate Gabriel Smith by two shots and is six clear of Weber State's Wilson.
