Weber State completes perfect weekend at Wildcat Invitational

Wildcats start the season 3-0 with wins on Saturday over San Jose State and Belmont
OGDEN - Weber State volleyball completed a perfect opening weekend to claim the title Saturday with a pair of victories at the Wildcat Invitational at Swenson Gym.
The Wildcats swept San Jose State 25-15, 25-22, 25-21 in their first match of the day before closing the tournament with a five-set victory over Belmont, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 22-25, 15-11. Weber State finished the tournament 3-0 after also defeating San Francisco in four sets Friday night.
vs. San Jose StateÂ
Against San Jose State, Weber State hit .260 with 42 kills and held the Spartans to a .130 hitting percentage. The Wildcats also finished with 11 team blocks.
Alexis Carlson led the Wildcats with 17 kills on 29 attacks with just three errors for a .483 hitting percentage. Rose Moore added 13 kills and six blocks, while Ziya Munyer also had six blocks. Morgan Pratt finished with 25 assists and seven digs, and Marly Pratt had a team-high 13 digs.
The Wildcats pulled away in the opening set for a 25-15 victory and then held off the Spartans in the second. San Jose State led by as many as three points early in the second before Weber State rallied and Carlson finished the set with a kill for the 25-22 win. Weber State completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in the third.
vs. Belmont
The 'Cats were back at it Saturday night against Belmont in a five-set thriller.Â
Carlson again led the way with 21 kills and hit .400, committing five errors on 40 attacks. Moore added 18 kills and six blocks, while Tennille Gonder had 14 kills and hit .355. Munyer finished with eight kills on 12 attacks for a .583 hitting percentage and added six blocks and three service aces. Stacia Barker had a match-high 10 blocks.
The Wildcats took a back-and-forth opening set 25-23 before Belmont evened the match with a 25-18 win in the second. Weber State responded with its best offensive set of the match in the third, totaling 19 kills with just three errors and hitting .500 in a 25-20 victory. Belmont forced a fifth set with a 25-22 win in the fourth.
Weber State never trailed in the deciding set. The Wildcats scored the first three points and built a 7-3 lead. Belmont cut the deficit to two at 11-9, but Weber State scored four of the final six points, with Gonder delivering the match-winning kill for the 15-11 victory.
Wildcat Invitational title
For the weekend, Carlson led Weber State with 48 kills and a .396 hitting percentage, averaging 4.00 kills per set. She was named the Tournament MVP for her performance.Â
Moore totaled 39 kills and 14 blocks, while Munyer had 16 blocks and a team-high nine service aces. Marly Pratt recorded 53 digs, and Morgan Pratt finished with 96 assists and 21 digs.
As a team, Weber State hit .255 over the three matches while holding its opponents to .184. The Wildcats had 24 service aces compared to 12 for their opponents and totaled 33 blocks to 22 for the opposition.
The 'Cats now hit the road at Cal State Bakersfield for two matches next week.Â
The next home matches will be September 15 against Utah State and September 17 against BYU.Â
