'Cats fall to Buffaloes in Boulder

BOULDER, Colo. - Weber State put up some points but couldn't slow down the Buffaloes as the Wildcats fell 52-21 to Colorado Saturday afternoon at Folsom Field.

Colorado scored 21 points in each of the first two quarters and totaled 578 yards of offense in the win. Weber State finished with 372 yards, including 245 passing and 127 rushing.

Freshman Nate Dahle threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns, completing 20 of 48 passes. Noah Kjar had seven catches for 121 yards and two touchdowns, including a 70-yard reception. He has now had at least 100 receiving yards in all three games and has had two touchdowns in each of the first three games.

Robert Young added six catches for 66 yards and a touchdown. Omar Shah led the Wildcats on the ground with 65 yards on 12 carries.

Colorado struck quickly on its first possession with a 66-yard touchdown just 35 seconds into the game. After Weber State drove to the Colorado 37 on its next possession but was stopped on fourth down, CU had a 63-yard touchdown to give the Buffaloes a 14-0 lead with 11:54 remaining in the first quarter.

The Wildcats got on the board after the defense forced the first turnover of the game. Teni Worthen sacked Lewis for an 8-yard loss and forced a fumble that was recovered by Zion Finau at the Colorado 28. Five plays later, Dahle found Young for a 13-yard touchdown, and David Dellenbach's extra point cut the Colorado lead to 14-7 with 7:07 left in the first quarter.

Colorado answered on its next possession with a 48-yard touchdown to extend the lead to 21-7 with 4:52 remaining in the quarter.

The Buffaloes opened the second-quarter scoring with a 55-yard touchdown run, giving Colorado a 28-7 lead with 14:50 remaining in the half.

Weber State responded with a six-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. On third-and-10 from the Wildcat 25, Dahle connected with Kjar for a 70-yard completion to the Colorado 5. Three plays later, Dahle found Kjar for a 6-yard touchdown to make it 28-14 with 12:11 remaining in the second quarter.

The Buffaloes answered with a 90-yard drive, capped by a 32-yard touchdown pass with 7:38 left in the half.

The Wildcat defense followed with a three-and-out that included an 8-yard sack by Kevin Johnson. Colorado added another touchdown late in the half to give the Buffaloes a 42-14 halftime lead.

The Wildcats scored another touchdown in the fourth quarter as Dahle finished it with a 12-yard touchdown pass to Kjar with 7:42 remaining. It was Kjar's second touchdown catch of the game and Dahle's third touchdown pass.
Weber State finished with 23 first downs and converted 8 of 17 third-down attempts.

Defensively, Worthen finished with a team-high eight tackles, a sack, a tackle for loss, and a forced fumble. Zach Smith added seven tackles and a pass breakup, while Jayden Mayberry had six tackles. Weber State recorded three sacks, with Worthen, Vaenuku and Johnson each getting one. The Wildcats also recovered two Colorado fumbles.

The 21 points are tied for the most points the Wildcats have scored against a Power 4 school.

After three straight road games to begin the season, it's finally home for the Wildcats, who will have four of their next five games at Stewart Stadium.

WSU will host Northwestern State on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the home opener, which will include a post-game drone show.
