OGDEN — After three straight road games to start the season, Weber State finally played its first game at home on Saturday as the 'Cats knocked off Northwestern State 49-20 in the home opener at Stewart Stadium.

Weber State scored 21 points in the first quarter and rushed for 229 yards in the win. The Wildcats totaled 441 yards of offense, including 229 on the ground and 212 through the air. WSU scored seven touchdowns and converted 6 of 10 third-down attempts.

With the win, the 'Cats improved to 2-2 overall in the first home game under new head coach Eric Kjar.

WSU scored on its opening possession, driving 51 yards in six plays. Nate Dahle connected with Marvin Session for an 11-yard touchdown with 12:42 remaining in the first quarter to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

The Wildcat special teams produced the next score as Teni Worthen blocked a 36-yard field goal attempt, which Tre Turner recovered and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 with 10:03 left in the first quarter.

On the next play from scrimmage, Raimoana Tinirauarii recovered a Demon fumble at the 23-yard line and two plays later, Spencer Ferguson scored on a 23-yard run, and Weber State led 21-0, just 5:18 into the game.

Northwestern State put together a 17-play drive later in the quarter, but Weber State stopped the Demons on fourth down at the WSU 13-yard line.

The Demons scored their first touchdown early in the second quarter on a four-yard touchdown pass, but Ashden Oberg blocked the extra point to keep Weber State ahead 21-6.

Weber State added another touchdown in the second quarter and took a 28-6 lead into halftime. The Wildcats had scored touchdowns on four of their first-half possessions, with two of the scores coming directly after takeaways or blocked kicks.

The Wildcat defense opened the second half by stopping Northwestern State on fourth down near midfield. Weber State followed with an eight-play, 55-yard touchdown drive to extend the lead to 35-6 with 9:41 remaining in the third quarter.

After forcing a three-and-out, the Wildcats struck again. Seth Rigtrup broke a 34-yard run to the Northwestern State 37, and on the next play, Dahle connected with Ammon Munyer for a 37-yard touchdown. The three-play, 80-yard drive gave Weber State a 42-6 lead with 6:29 left in the third quarter.

Northwestern State took advantage of a Weber State interception late in the third quarter and scored early in the fourth to cut the lead to 42-13.

Weber State answered with another touchdown drive after the ensuing kickoff. The Wildcats started at the Northwestern State 40, and Dahle completed passes of 20 yards to Semisi Kinikini and 20 yards to Robert Young to move the ball to the one-yard line. Kinikini scored on a 1-yard run with 10:36 remaining to make it 49-13.
