Entering into his fourth season on the Wildcat staff, Kevin Clune takes on the additional responsibility of Assistant Head Coach. He will assist Coach McBride in the day-to-day duties of running the football operations. Clune has been WSU’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the past three seasons and will continue with those assignments as well.
For the second season in a row, Clune’s defense ranked SECOND overall in the Big Sky Conference. His 2007 squad yielded an average of just 348.4 yards per game. The Wildcats ranked first in Pass Defense allowing 212.2 yards a contest and were third in rush defense giving up 136.2 yards per game. WSU’s 23-0 win at Northern Colorado was the first shutout of a league opponent since 1980 and the first shutout of a league opponent on the road since 1966.
Two of his players, J.D Folsom (2nd Team) and Brad Stewart (Honorable Mention) earned All-Big Sky honors in 2007. In 2006, Tyler DeBry earned First Team All-Big Sky accolades.
Clune joined Coach McBride’s staff in 2005 after spending two seasons as the defensive coordinator at Souther Utah University. With Clune overseeing the defense the T-Birds allowed just 296.0 yards of total offense per game in 2004 and yielded an average of 22.5 points per contest. SUU defeated Weber State, 34-31, in the 2004 season opener for both teams.
Under Clune’s guidance, SUU outside linebacker Nick DiPadova earned Second Team NCAA Division I-AA All-American honors in 2004 and was Honorable Mention in 2003. Marques Harris, a transfer from Colorado, was named Third Team NCAA Division I-AA All-American in 2004 as well.
Clune is reunited with Coach Ron McBride after serving as a graduate assistant coach on the Utah staff in 2001 and 2002. He gained valuable experience during those two seasons working on both sides of the ball. In 2001, he helped coach the Ute running backs and in 2002 worked with the linebackers under defensive coordinator and now Utah head coach, Kyle Whittingham. He also spent a great deal of time in special teams preparation and scouting.
Clune also spent time on the football staffs at Occidental College and Fullerton Junior College. At Occidental, his primary responsibility was the defensive line, and for three seasons at Fullerton JC, he coached the linebackers and was the special teams coordinator. He also worked on the staffs at Dos Pueblos High School and Palma High School.
Clune was a defensive lineman at Fullerton JC for one year and spent one season at the University of San Diego.
