The Weber State women's basketball team won for the fifth straight time after a 65-58 overtime win Monday night at UC Irvine. The victory moves the Wildcats to 6-3 on the season after their first road win of the season.
Senior Sara Tuomi led the Wildcats with a season-high 25 points with ?? of those points coming in the second half and overtime. Tuomi started the game 3-17 shooting but from that point she was 6-9 the rest of the way and was 7-8 from the free throw line for the night. Tuomi also tied a season-high with seven rebounds and the 25 points moved her past WSU head coach Carla Taylor and assistant coach Stephanie Stanger-Hale into 11th place on the Weber State all-time scoring list. Tuomi has scored in double-figures in all nine games for the Wildcats this season.
Senior Ahkiah Hunter, this week's Big Sky Co-Player of the Week, finished with 16 points and sophomore Tonya Schnibbe added seven and led the Wildcats with a career-high nine rebounds to go along with four steals and five assists. Ali Thorderson added eight points off the bench.
After trailing 26-24 at halftime the ?Cats came out and had a quick three-pointer by Hunter to take the lead. From that point the ?Cats would never trail again and led by as many as nine points in the second half. But the Anteaters came back and went on a 13-4 run to tie the game with 7:11 to play. From there it was tight the rest of regulation and a three-point attempt by Tuomi to win the game was off and the teams headed to overtime.
In the extra period Weber State outscored the Anteaters 13-6 as they shot 3-6 from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the free throw line in the extra period. UC Irvine was just 1-9 from the field in overtime.
The game marked Weber State's first overtime game since November 2006 and their first overtime victory since November 2004.
Weber State shot 35 percent from the field and was 4-17 from three-point land. UC Irvine committed 22 turnovers while the Wildcats had 15. Weber State also pulled down a season-high 46 rebounds but they were still outrebounded as the Anteaters had 49, the most Weber State has given up this season.
The ?Cats will continue their four game road trip when they play at Utah Friday night in Salt Lake City.
