20th Ranked BYU Uses A Big First Half To Defeat Weber State 72-57

PROVO, Utah -- According to WSU head coach Randy Rahe, the 20th ranked BYU .Cougars were as good advertised and more. The Cougars raced to a 42-21 half time lead and never looked back defeating the Weber State Wildcats 72-57 before 11,459 in the Marriott Center. It was WSU's 17th straight loss to the Cougars in Provo. The Wildcats have never beaten BYU in Provo.

WSU guard Kellen McCoy hit a three-pointer with 13:04 left in the first half closing the BYU lead to 13-10. But the Cougars salted the game away with a 22-6 scoring run over the next nine minutes to forge a 35-16 lead. Lee Cummard's two free throws with four seconds left gave the Cougars a 42-21 half time lead.

The Wildcats shot just 9-28 from the field in the first half and did not attempt a single free throw while the Cougars made 12-28 from the floor including 6-14 from behind the arc and connected on 12-15 free throws.

If it was any consolation, the Wildcats came out with some fire in their eyes in the second half out scoring the Cougars 36-30. Most of the offense was fueled by freshman center Trevor Morris (6-9, 240 ? Nampa, Idaho). In just his fifth collegiate game Morris came off the bench to score a team high 12 points hitting 4-5shots from the field and 4-6 from the line. He also added five rebounds. Morris was WSU's only double figure scorer.

“BYU is a very solid basketball team and are as good as advertised,”said WSU head coach Randy Rahe. “They come out from all angles, inside and out, side to side. They are really hard to defend and they play really hard on their defensive end.”

BYU had four players in double figures led by 6-3 guard Sam Burgess with 16. Lee Cummard, Trent Plaisted and Jonathan Tavernari each added 14. Plaisted had a “double/double” with a game high 15 rebounds as well.

The loss dropped the Wildcats to 2-5 on the season and it was WSU's third straight loss. The ?Cats complete a four-game road tour this coming Saturday, December 8 traveling to the University of San Francisco for a 2:00 (PST) game in War Memorial Gym. The Wildcats return back to the Dee Events Center on Friday, December 14 vs. Montana-Western. Tipoff for that game is at 8:05 p.m.(MST).
