GREELEY, Colo. -- The Weber State women's soccer team was handed its first loss of the 2008 Big Sky Conference season on Sunday, as Northern Colorado claimed a 2-1 victory.
Brittany Knott and Jessica Zimmerman scored goals less than a minute apart for the Bears in the first half, and UNC held off a Weber State rally to earn its first win of league play. Northern Colorado improved to 6-10-0 overall and 1-2-0 in the conference, while WSU fell to 6-7-2 overall and 3-1-0 in the Big Sky.
Knott's goal came on a header from a Olivia Deadmond cross at the 28:20 mark of the match. Zimmerman struck at the 29:14 mark on a Marcie Johnson assist to put WSU in a 2-0 hole.
The Wildcats pressed offensively, out-shooting the Bears 18-11 overall and 11-6 in the second half. The pressure finally paid off in the 61st minute as Abby Robinson stole the ball from the UNC defense and beat goalkeeper Kristin Salminen for her first-ever collegiate tally.
Following the Robinson goal, Weber State recorded five more shots, four of which were on-goal and stopped by Salminen. The UNC keeper totaled nine saves overall to preserve the win for the Bears.
The loss dropped the WIldcats to second place in the conference after Portland State moved to 3-0-1 in league play with a 4-1 win over Eastern Washington. Weber State remains in control of its own destiny, however, as the 'Cats play host to the Vikings on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 3:00 p.m. in Ogden.
