OGDEN, Utah -- Freshman forward Kierstin Wood scored twice to lead the Weber State women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over UTEP on Friday afternoon at Wildcat Soccer Field.
The Wildcats (2-3-1) got on the board in the 27th minute as Whitney Smith found Wood on a middle run, putting her in a one-on-one with UTEP goalkeeper Chandra Morden. Wood placed a nice shot past Morden's sliding save attempt.
Wood scored again in the 81st minute when Hayley McCoy found Emily Freshman left of the goal, who in turn placed a nice cross to Wood in the center of the box for a shot to the right side of the net.
The pair of tallys give Wood three goals on the season. She is now tied with McCoy for second on the team in scoring with six points.
The Wildcats out-shot the Miners 23 to 8 overall and put 12 shots on-goal to UTEP's three. WSU goalkeeper Rebecca Ritchie turned away all three Miner shots on-goal for her second clean sheet of the season.
The Wildcats will travel next week to the UC-Irvine Invitational to play the host-Anteaters and Cal State Bakersfield. The match against UC Irvine will be on Friday, Sep. 19 at 7:00 p.m. PST, while the contest with CS Bakersfield will be on Sunday, Sep. 21 at Noon PST.
