WSU Volleyball Wins Gonzaga Tournament

The Weber State volleyball team captured the title of the Gonzaga Invitational Saturday with two victories, giving them five straight wins. The ?Cats beat UTEP 3-2 in the morning match and knocked off the host Gonzaga Bulldogs 3-1 to win the tournament in Spokane, Washington.
In the first match of the day the 'Cats defeated UTEP 28-26, 25-20, 25-20, 29-27, 15-12. After falling down 2-1 the 'Cats pulled out an exciting fourth set victory. There were four lead changes and 12 ties in the fourth set. The Wildcats broke a 27-27 tie to pull out the win. In the fifth set the 'Cats broke a 10-10 tie with a 5-2 run to secure the match. It was the fourth five-set win of the season for Weber State.
Senior Brittney Bisaillon led the 'Cats with 18 kills, which tied her career-high. She also had just two hitting errors and hit .593 for the match and recorded seven blocks.
Junior Micah Folsom posted her second straight double-double with 17 kills to go along with 15 digs. Chelsea Bair also had a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs and Caitlyn Anderson tied her season-high with 27 digs.
In the championship match of the Gonzaga Invitational the ?Cats beat the host Bulldogs 25-20, 21-25, 25-23, 26-24 to secure the title.
In the fourth set of the ?Cats trailed 23-21 but finished the match on a 5-1 run to secure the victory.
“We kind of persevered and hung in there today,” said WSU head coach Al Givens. “We really showed a lot of character and resolve under pressure and performed well when we needed to.”
Micah Folsom posted a double-double for the third straight match finishing with a season-high 19 kills to go along with 12 digs. Bair posted 14 kills, her tenth straight match with ten or more kills, and Bisaillon added 11 kills.
Bisaillon was named the Tournament MVP, while Bair and Folsom were named to the All-Tournament Team.
Senior Leah Burmeister finished with five kills and a season-high 10 digs in the win over the Zags. In the process she became just the sixth Wildcat to ever record 1,000 career digs. Burmeister has played in 101 career matches at Weber State and also needs just 32 more kills to reach 1,000 for her career.
The Wildcats are now 7-0 in four and five set matches this season.
With a record of 8-3 the ?Cats are off to their best start since the 1995 season. The five match winning streak is also the longest streak in two seasons.
After playing the first 11 matches of the season on the road, the Wildcats will finally come home for a home match next week as they also open play in the Big Sky Conference. WSU will take on Eastern Washington next Thursday and host Portland State on Saturday at the Swenson Gym.
