Wildcats Take 5-2 Win Over Air Force

Colorado Springs, Colo. -- The Weber State men's tennis team improved to 5-4 on the season on Sunday with a 5-2 win over the Air Force Academy.
The Wildcats took the doubles point behind wins at the No. 1 and 3 positions. Sascha Kiehne and Simon Unger opened the day with an 8-6 win over Austin Francis and Cody Hall. The Falcons claimed a win at No. 2, but Spencer Marchant and Chris Williams preserved the point for Weber State with an 8-5 win over James Tomlin and Will Brown in the third spot.
In singles, Henning Hipp gave WSU a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brett Rodgers in the No. 3 spot in the lineup. Air Force then rallied to tie the score at 2-2 with wins at No 2. and No. 4.
Kiehne broke the tie with a three-sets win at No. 1. The junior dropped the opening set 6-2, but got back into the match with a 6-3 second set win. He then outlasted Francis 11-9 in the third-set tiebreaker.
The Wildcats then finished off the Falcons with wins from Williams and Travis Covington in the No. 5 and 6 spots. Williams defeated Tomlin 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 5 for the clinching point and Covington added a 6-1, 6-4 win over Alex Beaussart at No. 6.
The Wildcats will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 27 as they take on Utah State in Logan, Utah at 2:00 p.m.
