Wildcats Drop 4-3 Decision to Utah State

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State men's tennis team dropped four of six singles matches on Tuesday as Utah State rallied for a 4-3 win at the Ogden Athletic Club.
The Wildcats (6-7) won all three doubles matches by an 8-6 margin to take the early lead. Sascha Kiehne and Simon Unger defeated Jakob Asplund and Bryan Marchant at No. 1, Henning Hipp and Travis Covington downed Alex Thatcher and Amit Maharaj at No. 2 and Spencer Marchant and Chris Williams defeated Mike Banks and Jordan Barlow at No. 3.
The 'Cats then took the first set 6-2 in each of the top three singles matches, while the Aggies (8-5) took the first set in the bottom three matches. USU held on to win in the four through six spots, while the 'Cats won at two and three to tie the score at 3-3.
Unger defeated Marchant 6-2, 6-3 in the No. 2 position, while Hipp got past Maharaj 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3. The match came down to the No. 1 spot, where Asplund came from behind to defeat Kiehne. Asplund took the final two sets 6-2, 6-3 over the Wildcats' top player, who faded down the stretch due to effects of a recent illness.
The Wildcats will return to the courts on Wednesday to take on Eastern Washington at Noon at the Ogden Athletic Club.
