Wildcats Claim Big Sky Win Over PSU

OGDEN, Utah -- The Weber State women's tennis team (3-12 overall; 1-2 Big Sky) earned an important conference win on Friday afternoon with a 4-3 victory over Portland State (3-15; 0-6) at the Ogden Athletic Club.
"This was a really good win for us," said WSU head coach Jonas Ehrlin. "It keeps us in the race to make the Big Sky tournament. I was really pleased with the mindset that our girls came out with today. They knew this was a very important match for us, and they played very composed under that pressure."
The Wildcats won what turned out to be a crucial doubles point to open the day. Keya Jenkins and Greyce Farias defeated Alyssa Ferry and Victoria Bravo 8-4 at No. 2 and Karlie Hancock and Elsje Beneke defeated Caitlin Stocking and Kylea Gleason 8-2 at No. 3 to earn the point.
The two teams split the six singles matches, giving the match to Weber State. Hancock and Beneke each won, giving the pair wins at both doubles and singles. Hancock downed Bravo 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 5 position, while Beneke defeated Gleason 6-4, 6-1 at No. 6.
After the Vikings won at the No. 1 and 4 spots, WSU still needed a win at either 2 or 3 to secure the match. Caroline Drugge won her opening set 6-2 at No. 3, and then rallied from an early deficit in the second set to earn the clinching point with a 6-4 win to avoid a third set.
"Karlie and Elsje were both double winners today," said Ehrlin. "But this was really a team effort. Everyone contributed today."
