SALT LAKE CITY -- The Weber State women's soccer team improved to 3-0 on the season Wednesday night with a 1-0 shutout over 21st-ranked University of Utah (4-1) at Ute Field.
The Wildcats got contributions from a pair of transfers who returned to their former home field and played big roles in the upset win. In the 38th minute, sophomore midfielder Roxy Tebbs, who went scoreless as a freshman in 2007 with the Utes, received a corner kick from Ari Wood at the top of the box and slotted a shot to the right post to provide the lone goal of the match. Junior defender Alyssa Toomey, meanwhile, helped keep her former team scoreless for the full 90 minutes.
The Utes outshot the Wildcats 28 to 12 on the night and put 12 shots on-goal, compared to five for WSU. Hanna Terry and Lauren Hair each put four shots on the Wildcat goal.
Rebecca Ritchie recorded 11 saves for her second-straight shutout and the 19th of her career, moving her within one clean sheet of breaking Meagan Thunell's school record of 19.5. Ritchie and the Wildcats now have run up a consecutive scoreless streak of 264 minutes and 35 seconds, dating back to the sixth minute of a 2-1 win over Westminster on Aug. 21.
The Wildcats defeated Utah for just the third time in the all-time series between the schools and the first time since 1998, when WSU claimed a 2-0 win in Ogden.
Weber State will return to action next weekend as they travel to El Paso, Texas to participate in a tournament at the University of Texas-El Paso. The Wildcats will face Arkansas State on Sep. 11 before taking on the host-Miners on Sep. 13.
