'Cats Suffer Close Loss to Ducks

BOISE, Idaho -- The Weber State men's tennis team (0-2) suffered a tough loss on Wednesday, falling 4-3 to the University of Oregon (1-0) at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
"This was a heartbreaking loss," said WSU head coach Jared Burnham. "I was really happy with the way the guys played, and it really came down to the wire. Unfortunately, they (Oregon) were able to pull out the deciding match."
The Ducks rolled through all three doubles matches to take the first point of the day, but the Wildcats rebounded in singles, winning each of the top three spots. The Ducks clinched the win by taking the bottom three singles matches.
Sascha Kiehne gave the Wildcats their first point of the day with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Ric Mortera in the No. 3 singles spot. Henning Hipp downed Marcos Verdasco 7-5, 1-6, 6-4 at No. 1, and Simon Unger defeated Alex Cornelissen 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 to give WSU its other two wins.
Cole Paterson nearly gave the Wildcats the point they were looking for, but Duncan MacDonald-Korth pulled out a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win for Oregon.
The Wildcats will have 10 days off before facing Sacramento State in the first Big Sky match of the year. WSU will take on the Hornets on Jan. 30 at 10:00 a.m. in Sacramento.
