In three career games against Idaho State University, WSU's Pocatello, Idaho native, Nick Hansen, was just 4-19 (.210) from the field - all of them three-point shot attempts - and was a dismal 1-11 in WSU's 95-93 three overtime win in Pocatello back on January 16. Hansen erased all those bad memories in one feld-swoop, hitting 7-11 from long range and leading the Wildcats
to an 89-64 win on Saturday night in Ogden.
The victory clinched the regular season Big Sky Conference title for the Wildcats and the right to host the semifinals and finals of the 2010 Big Sky Conference Tournament on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 9-10 at the Dee Events Center.
Hansen followed up on his sterling performance in last week's 81-76 home court win over second-place Northern Colorado where he was a perfect 6-6 from the arc. Hansen's 11 attempts vs. ISU on Saturday were all three-pointers. He finishes his career going 11-30 (.367) vs. Idaho State with all 30 field attempts coming from the three-point line.
“Coach Rahe told me to just relax and don't worry before last week's game against Northern Colorado, so I did,” said Hansen. “We had a lot of rest this week and I felt fresh. I knew I hadn't shot that well against Idaho State but I really wasn't trying to press it tonight. The shots just came in the flow of the game and I felt pretty confident.”
Hansen was 4-7 from the arc in the first half as he and fellow senior, Steve Panos, each scored 12 first half points helping the Wildcats to a 42-29 lead at intermission. It was a three by Hansen with 4:32 left in the first half which ignited a 9-0 scoring run by the Wildcats to go up 42-27. Damian Lillard, the Big Sky's leading scorer, did not have a first half point going 0-4 from the field.
Lillard the first basket of the second half on a jumper at the 19:39 mark. Another Hansen three ignited another big WSU scoring run, this one an 11-0 run starting at the 14:46 mark. That put the Wildcats up 60-33 and they never looked back as Coach Rahe cleared the bench and every player, including walk-on Cody Larson, scored. Larson hit a three-pointer with 24 seconds left and the shot clock ready to expire. It was his first points as a Wildcat.
Steve Panos scored just two second half points, ending the game with 14 which included a perfect 6-6 from the line. Kyle Bullinger had 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds and Lindsey Hughey scored 10 off the bench. The Wildcats nailed 13-30 from the three-point line and had 20 assists to just nine turnovers in the game and out rebounded the Bengals 32-26.
Idaho State's senior guard, Amorrow Morgan, led the Bengals with 17. Morgan scored 30 against the Wildcats in the three-overtime game in Pocatello. Austin Kilpatrick had 12, seldom-used guard, Todd Starks, had 11 off the bench and Demetrius Monroe had 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Bengals, 7-20 overall / 4-10 Big Sky) were without the services of starting point guard Broderick Gilchrest who sustained an injury last Monday night at home vs. Cal State Bakersfield. Gilchrest scored 25 points vs. Weber State in that three-overtime game.
Weber State is now 18-8 overall and 12-2 in Big Sky play. The Wildcats play at Eastern Washington next Friday, February 26, then at Portland State on Sunday, February 28 in the Altitude TV Game.
