OGDEN, Utah -- Seattle University took another pair from the Weber State softball team on Saturday afternoon at Wildcat Field to finish off a four-game sweep.
The Wildcats fell 5-1 to the Redhawks in the opening game, and dropped the second game 6-2. With the losses, WSU drops to 1-35 overall and 1-7 in Pacific Coast Softball Conference play. Seattle improved to 10-24-1 overall and 6-2 in the conference.
BreAnn Jones started strong for the Wildcats in the opener, allowing only a single unearned run over three innings. The Redhawks got to reliever Angela DeVries in the fourth, however, scoring three times to break the game open.
Abby Bowcutt accounted for the lone Wildcat run in the sixth inning. Her line shot to right field got past a diving attempt by Seattle's Katie Petersen and went to the fence. Bowcutt circled the bases for a stand-up inside-the-park home run.
Seattle answered the run with a single score of its own in the bottom of the sixth. The Wildcats could not manage a last inning rally, as Kelsey Reynolds retired the side in order to finish off the complete game victory.
In game two, Jones again took the ball to start the game for Weber State. The junior pitcher was uneffective this time out, however, allowing the first five Redhawk batters to reach base before she was replaced. The third batter in the inning, Jessica Ulrich, provided the big blow with a three-run inside-the-park homer. Ulrich blasted a ball down the left field line that careened off the fence and away from Cassie Beene, allowing the Redhawks' first baseman to round the bags.
Ariel Whiteman came on in relief and immediately hit a batter to load the bases, but then recorded back-to-back strikeouts and a pop-up out to retire the side with no further damage.
The Redhawks added to their 3-0 lead with another three-run inning in the bottom of the fifth. Ulrich again made the Wildcats pay, this time with a two-run triple. Ulrich finished the game 2 for 4 with five RBI.
Seattle's Hannah Klein cruised through the first five innings, allowing only two walks and holding the Wildcats hitless. Brandi Christopher broke up the no-hit bid in the top of the sixth with a leadoff double to the left center gap. Britinie Hardine followed with a double to left, scoring Christopher. With one out, Heather Jackson recorded the team's third double of the inning with an RBI two-bagger to right field, but Klein got out of the inning with consecutive fly balls.
Jones led off the top of the seventh with another double, but Reynolds returned to the circle for the Hawks to retire three-straight, ending the Wildcats' hopes for a rally.
