On Thursday and Friday, Andy Heaton (Jr.-Kanab, Utah) and Michaela North (Sr.-Kennewick, Washington) will be competing at the ISU Multi-Event Meet at Holt Arena in Pocatello, Idaho. Heaton is set to compete in the Decathlon and North in the Heptathlon. This is the first of two Multi-Events meets this month. BYU will be hosting one on April 21-22.
Coach Dan Walker's men's team has 18 athletes qualified in 25 events for next month's Big Sky Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championship on May 12-15 at Weber State.
Walker said almost every athlete, except a couple of long distance runners, is set to compete this Saturday, and he's looking for a bit more improvement from his troops.
“Our workouts the last week indicate we are getting better,” said Walker. “This week's meet will give them a vindicate that improvement. I am looking for some improvement in the 400 meters and with Matt White running this week that probably should happen.”
LAST WEEK
The Wildcat men had some good marks at last week's BYU Invitational on April 2 in Provo. ... Zach Parry (Soph.-Taylorsville, Utah) threw a career best 179-01.25 in the Hammer Throw. That is the 9th best throw in WSU men's outdoor track and field history and the 4th best toss in the Big Sky Conference this season. ... He was one of three throwers who had season best. Ryan Shelton (Soph.-Soldotna, Alaska) had a season, and career best, throw of 168-11.25. Eki Faagai (Sr.-Kanehoe, Hawai'i) had a season best of 168-06.00 and also had a season best of 161-06.50 in the Discus.
... Chris Burnett (Jr.-Farmington, Utah) and Bob Lambert (Sr.-West Jordan, Utah) each had career best times in the 5,000 meters. Burnett ran 15:07.86 and Lambert, 15:33.08..
Gettting healthy is a priority for the Wildcat women. Coach Jim Blaisdell will be minus a trio of sprinters for this week's meet but is still looking for improvement in some other events.
“Jerica Wilson, Maggie Ochsner and Kristin Billings won't be running this week,” said Blaisdell. “They have some nagging leg injuries which need some rest, so we won't be running the sprint relay this week. We will be looking for some good times in the 400 and 1,500 meters this week.”
Ally Dean (Sr.-South Ogden, Utah) will be running the 400 meters this week. Dean currently has the best mark in the Big Sky Conference this season at 54.77. She will be joined by Camille Lott (Jr.-Kaysville, Utah), Amber Henry (Fr.-Mountain View, Wyoming), Audrey Adams (So.-Mona, Utah) and Floreece Williams (So.-North Las Vegas, Nevada). Henry and Adams need to run 58.00 or better to qualify for the Conference meet.
A quartet of runners are set to run the 1,500 meters. It will be the first times posted by the Wildcats in the event this season. Laken Skidmore (So.-Terreton, Idaho), Loren Storey (So.-Kaysville, Utah), Taylor Thornley (Fr.-Logan, Utah) and Jenna Deelstra (Fr.-Ogden, Utah) will be shooting for a time of 4:41.00 or better to qualify for the Conference meet.
In the field events, Blaisdell said the marks are good, but he would like to see some improvement this week to start building momentum.
The women now have 17 athletes qualified in 28 events. Blaisdell said in order for the Wildcats to make a serious run at the Conference meet, he needs to get those number up around 22 athletes in 33-35 events.
LAST WEEK
At the BYU Invitational, Kristin Billings, Michaela North and Camille Lott each qualified for the 2010 Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championship in the 200 meters.
Loren Storey qualified in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 11:21.91 which is the 2nd best time in the Big Sky this season.
Taylor Thornley qualified in the 5,000 meters, and her time was good enough for the 10,000 meters. Jenna Deelstra's 5,000 time didn't qualify her in that event, but it was good enough for a spot in the 10,000 meters.
