Wildcats Drop Pair of Matches

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Weber State men's tennis team fell 7-0 to UNLV on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex to drop the second of two losses this weekend. The Wildcats opened the pair of matches with a tight 4-3 loss to the University of Utah at the Eccles Tennis Center in Salt Lake City.
On Friday, the Utes used the opening doubles point for the decisive point. Landon Barlow and Dave Hintze defeated Matt Crowley and Garrett LaBarre 8-6 in the No. 2 match, but the Utes claimed an 8-2 win at No. 3 and pulled out an 8-6 win at No. 1 for the point.
The two teams split the six singles matches, with the Utes winning at the No. 2, 4 and 5 positions. Simon Unger, defeated the Utes top player Dmytro Mamedov 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1, Barlow won again at No. 3 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Garrett LaBarre, and Oliver Good defeated Gino Octa 7-5, 6-0 at No. 6.
On Sunday, the Wildcats faced off with 66th-ranked UNLV and were swept. The Rebels took all three doubles matches and then won all six singles matches with five of the six ending in straight-sets. Ciao Poitena took the first set from Bernard Schoeman at No. 4, but Schoeman rallied in the second to stay alive and won a super-set in the third for the victory.
The Wildcats fall to 0-3 on the season and will resume play next weekend with matches scheduled on the road against Oregon, Portland and Idaho.
