POCATELLO, Idaho - Given the chance of a fresh start, the Wildcats didn't waste the opportunity.
Sophomore forward Felicia Sortor scored in the 90th minute, lifting the Weber State University women's soccer team to a nail-biting 1-0 win over archrival Idaho State on Friday afternoon at Davis Field in the Big Sky Conference opener for both teams.
Sortor's goal, which came with 59 seconds remaining, was the culmination of a strong second half by the Wildcats, who recorded 14 of their season high-tying 24 shots in the half.
The winning play came after junior midfielder Kierstin Raught received a sitting ball from senior forward Jessie Baddley on the right wing, with Raught slotting the ball on the ground through the defense to the far left side of the field as Sortor ran on to it. The Syracuse, Utah native finished with a chipped shot over the Bengals' goalkeeper from 18 yards out.
The tally is Sortor's team-best third goal of the year, while the assist was Raught's first of the 2011 campaign.
Weber State had eight second half shots on goal to just three for the Bengals and took five corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Ryann Waldman had the shutout in goal, her second of the season and the Wildcats' third lockdown of the season, lowering their Big Sky Conference-best goals-against average to 1.0.
Waldman made six saves in the first half, but needed to make just three stops in the second half to preserve the clean sheet.
Weber State (1-0-0 Big Sky, 3-8-0 overall) improved to 9-6-1 against Idaho State, topping the Bengals for the second straight year and the third time in four seasons while improving to 6-5-0 all-time at Davis Field.
The Wildcats will return to Big Sky action on Friday, Oct. 7 at Greeley, Colo., against Northern Colorado. Kick off is set for 7 p.m.
