CHUBBUCK, Idaho -- Despite twice holding leads, the Weber State University softball team suffered a pair of road setbacks at rival Idaho State on Friday afternoon.
The Bengals captured the day's opening game 11-2 in five innings, and then edged the Wildcats 6-5 in the second game.
Weber State had 11 combined hits, with three players -- Britinie Hardine, Ashley Huddleston and Sarah Clark -- each gaining two.
The Wildcats led 1-0 in the first inning of game one, but Idaho State scored five runs in the second to take a 5-1 lead. WSU cut it to 5-2, but Idaho State scored runs in each of the next three innings to take the five-inning decision by run-rule.
Trailing 3-0 in the second game, Weber State's bats exploded for five runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead, but Idaho State countered in the bottom half of the inning to make it 5-5. The game remained tied until the seventh inning, when the Bengals used a two-out single to bring home the winning run.
That run was the first earned run scored on Hardine in 20.2 innings spanning 12 appearances, as the senior took her fourth loss of the year in falling to 4-4.
Erika James had a stolen base in each game to move her to 30 for the season and leaves her just 10 away from trying WSU's career record in her first season with the team.
Weber State (9-29, 2-8 PCSC) will face Idaho State (9-28, 2-8) twice more on Saturday to wrap up the four-game series.
